GMR started off as a school software project as a platform for gaming community websites under the gamers.com.mt domain. The main goal was to provide custom-themed community websites that were easily manageable and had their own content. Although the project had its own degree of success we felt that by just providing an online portal for gamers, we did not make enough of an impact. The level of engagement from the local community was limited to the website itself and offered nothing more than mere information. That is where we decided that we need to get our hands dirty.
The local gaming community had fallen into its darkest times, LAN parties were no longer being organized and competitive tournaments came to a screeching halt, leaving gamers without a scope to take gaming seriously. Something needed to be done.
That is when our team formed and decided to host its first-ever esports event; a LAN party featuring Call of Duty, FIFA, and League of Legends. A mixture of the old and new with the largest prize pot ever in LAN history in Malta. The response was more than we had hoped for and we received amazing feedback from the community. There we realized that esports has a great audience here in Malta and is packed with potential and talent. At that point, it was decided that we will focus more on esports events and set out with some clear goals in mind.
Our goals would be to deliver high-quality esports events with astonishing venues, spectacular shows and always increasing prize pots. Secondly, we wanted to support our local talent and provide them with the means and scope to improve their skills and hopefully venture into the international competitive scene. Finally, we wanted to bring the international esports scene to Malta, hosting big title events in collaboration with foreign organisations and sponsors.
Since then we hosted various other events both online and offline and we are proud of what we achieved so far. The number of players and spectators attending our events continue to increase showing that we are making a difference. Our team works hard to bring professional events to the community, and we are delighted to see our work appreciated by the gamers.
Bigger events mean more work. That is why we have recently expanded our team and brought more people on board. Our doors are always open to people that share our passion in esports, and welcome anyone that wants to be actively involved in this industry.
